South Carolina, one city in.

Eleven shops, all of them Charleston — two on King Street and the rest over a bridge, in Mount Pleasant, on James and Johns Islands, and up in Park Circle.

The marketSaturdays

South Carolina starts here with a single city and eleven doors. Charleston is the whole of it for now, and it is not the tidy walking tour the postcards promise — only two of the eleven sit on King Street downtown, an antiques house that has held 191 King since 1922 and a tableware room a few numbers down at 180. Everything else asks for a car and a bridge.

Across the Cooper, Mount Pleasant carries the home and kitchen half of the list — Celadon at Home, The Coastal Cupboard, and Out of Hand over in the Old Village on Pitt Street. James Island holds the two we'd drive furthest for: a clay studio in Riverland Terrace and a garden centre on Folly Road that has been at it since 1981. Johns Island is further out again, and Park Circle sits north in North Charleston with a marketplace of sixty-odd pickers and makers under one roof.

The market is the fixed point. Saturday mornings, Marion Square, at the top of the same King Street — Lowcountry growers and artisans, and the easiest way to meet the makers before you go looking for their shops.

The rest of the state comes next, slowly, the way we add anything. Nothing here paid to be listed, and we haven't been through these doors ourselves yet — where we haven't, we say so on the shop's page. Confirm hours before you drive.

The slow route: King Street & the bridges

A Saturday built around the market, then out over the water while the afternoon holds.

Marion Square, early

The Charleston Farmers Market fills the square at the top of King on Saturday mornings — Lowcountry growers and artisans. Eat here, and let it set the pace for the day.

Downtown · Saturday morning

Down King Street, on foot

Walk the two blocks that hold both downtown listings — Geo. C. Birlant & Co. at 191 for the antiques, Tableau at 180 for the table. This is the only part of the day you won't need the car.

King Street · late morning

Over the Cooper to Mount Pleasant

The home and kitchen half of the list lives here — Johnnie Dodds and Long Point Road, then Pitt Street in the Old Village, which is the quieter and better of the two stops.

Mount Pleasant · afternoon

Back across to James Island

End with the clay studio in Riverland Terrace and the garden centre out on Folly Road. Plants and pots are the things worth carrying home, and this is the corner that sells them.
