Beyond the cityWarren

Rhode Island opens with nine shops, all of them gathered under one town page: Providence. It's a city that packs tightly, and the list does too. Craftland at 212 Westminster Street and Homestyle at 233 sit a few doors apart downtown, and Good Dog Antiques is a short walk east at 357 South Main, on the flat below College Hill.

Fox Point carries the clay and the plants. Three Wheel Studio throws at 436 Wickenden Street — Thursday through Sunday only, so time it — and Pothos Plant Shop is around on Ives, closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Hope Street does the work twice over: Stock Culinary Goods at 756, in the Hope Village stretch, is the cookware end of the list, and the Hope Street Farmers Market sets up a mile north in Lippitt Park at 1015. Robin Hollow Farm keeps its flower shop off on its own at 498 Kinsley Avenue, in the Valley.

One entry isn't in Providence at all. O&G Studio makes furniture at 30 Cutler Street in Warren, about half an hour southeast down the bay, in the mill buildings — modern heirloom furniture, in their words, handmade in the USA. It's the one on this page that needs a car and a note ahead.

We haven't been through these doors ourselves, and every shop's page says so plainly. Newport, Pawtucket and the South County towns come the way we add anything: slowly, and only when they're worth the drive.

The slow route: Providence on foot

Two blocks of Westminster, the length of Hope Street, Wickenden and Ives in Fox Point — and the drive to Warren if you have a second day.

The market at Lippitt Park

Start north, at 1015 Hope Street, where the Hope Street Farmers Market sets up in Lippitt Park. Market days shift with the season, so check before you plan the morning around it.

Blackstone · morning

Down Hope Street to Stock

Work a mile south along the same street to Stock Culinary Goods at 756, in Hope Village — pans, tools, table things, from people who call themselves obsessed with all things food. Open seven days, later midweek.

Hope Village · late morning

Westminster Street, two doors apart

Downtown is the densest stretch: Craftland at 212 and Homestyle at 233, then a short walk east to Good Dog Antiques at 357 South Main, below College Hill. Craftland posts hours; the other two don't — call first.

Fox Point, and the drive to Warren

End with Wickenden and Ives — Three Wheel Studio for the clay, Pothos for the plants, both on short weeks. Robin Hollow's flower shop is over on Kinsley in the Valley, and O&G Studio in Warren is the second-day drive.
