North Carolina opens here with a single city, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Thirteen shops, all of them in Asheville or the towns that ring it — Weaverville and Black Mountain, Arden and Kenilworth, West Asheville and Grovewood Village. That's the honest shape of this page today.
What Asheville gave us first was clay. Three working studios made the list — East Fork downtown, Mangum Pottery north in Weaverville, Batton Clayworks in Kenilworth — spread far enough apart that you drive between them rather than walk. Then the galleries: Grovewood for furniture and craft, Ariel and Horse + Hero within a couple of blocks of each other downtown, and the Antique Tobacco Barn for the vintage end of it.
The rest is kitchen and garden — Provisions Mercantile in West Asheville, Common Housefly over in Black Mountain, three plant and garden shops, and the city market downtown. We haven't stood inside every door yet. Where we haven't, the shop's page says so. The rest of the state comes when we've earned the right to write it.

Downtown on foot, then out to the studios and nurseries that don't sit anywhere near each other.

Ariel Gallery and Horse + Hero sit a couple of blocks apart, with East Fork's shop in the same walk. Do this part before you get in the car — it's the only stretch that rewards walking.

If the day lines up, Asheville City Market downtown is where the growers and the makers overlap. Go early, eat there, and let it set the pace for the rest of it.
North to Weaverville
Out of town for Mangum Pottery and, a little further along, Reems Creek Nursery. Two very different reasons to make the same drive — clay and plants, both worth the miles.
West Asheville, then east
