A Brooklyn shopfront block in late afternoon light
— The Directory · New York

New York, two hours apart.

Twenty-four shops in two entries — fourteen in the city, ten up the river in Hudson. One you walk in neighborhoods; the other is a single hill of shops with clay and furniture scattered around it.

— A letter · the river

Two entries, one river between them — and they ask for completely different weekends.

New York arrives on this map as two entries that barely resemble each other. Fourteen shops sit in the city — eleven of them in Brooklyn, three in Manhattan — and ten more sit up the river in and around Hudson. Same state, entirely different afternoon.

The city half is neighborhood work. Greenpoint holds Wilcoxson and Choplet for clay, Tula House for plants, and the Dobbin St. Vintage Co-op; one stretch of Atlantic Avenue holds three more; Boerum Hill has The Primary Essentials and GRDN; Fort Greene has YU Interiors, Red Hook has Recycled Brooklyn, and Prospect Heights has the Saturday Greenmarket at Grand Army Plaza. Manhattan is three — John Derian in the East Village, Coming Soon on the Lower East Side, and Fishs Eddy in the Flatiron.

Hudson is the opposite shape. Four of its ten are on Warren Street itself, a single long hill you walk end to end: FINCH, Valley Variety, Clove & Creek, and Flowerkraut. The market is four blocks off it on Saturday mornings. The other six spread out along the river — Fern and l&m studio, Kaaterskill Market in Catskill, Michael Robbins in Germantown, bluecashew up in Uptown Kingston.

Neither entry has been walked by us yet; everything here is compiled from public sources and marked as such on each shop's page. More of the state comes slowly, the way we add anything.

The slow route: Brooklyn, then the river

A Saturday in the city and a Sunday up the line — the two halves of this entry, in the order that makes sense.

Greenpoint first

Start where the makers are stacked closest: Wilcoxson and Choplet for clay, Tula House for plants, the Dobbin St. Vintage Co-op for everything else. All of it walkable before lunch.

Greenpoint · morning

The Greenmarket at Grand Army Plaza

If it's Saturday, cut down to Prospect Heights — the Greenmarket runs 8 to 4, year-round, at the top of the park. Eat here before the next stretch.

Prospect Heights · Sat 8–4

Atlantic Avenue and Boerum Hill

Three shops on the one avenue, plus The Primary Essentials and GRDN a block off it, and Whisk in Cobble Hill. This is the densest walk in the entry.

Up to Hudson, Sunday

Two hours up the river and the whole thing changes shape. Walk Warren Street end to end, then decide whether you have the daylight for Catskill's ceramics or Germantown's furniture on the way back.

New York, in short

Most of it is Brooklyn
Eleven of the fourteen city shops are across the river — Greenpoint, Boerum Hill, Fort Greene, Red Hook. Only three are in Manhattan.
Two markets, both Saturday
Grand Army Plaza runs Sat 8–4, Hudson runs Sat 9–1. You cannot do both in one weekend morning — pick a half.
Hudson is four towns
The Hudson entry also carries Catskill, Germantown, and Uptown Kingston. Warren Street you walk; the rest of it you drive.
On visiting
Several makers here keep studio hours by appointment or open weekends only. Where that's true we say so on the shop's page — worth a call before a long train ride.

Twenty-four, across two entries — fourteen in New York City and ten in the Hudson entry, which also covers Catskill, Germantown, and Uptown Kingston: home and vintage shops, furniture makers, ceramics studios, kitchen and table shops, plant and garden shops, and the markets.

When are the farmers markets?

The Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket in Prospect Heights runs Saturdays 8–4, year-round. The Hudson Farmers Market runs Saturdays 9–1 in season. Confirm before you go — hours shift with the weather.
